Sometimes in doing business day-to-day, things can start to pile up, like paperwork and bills. It can be a monumental headache to sift through paper mess and clutter just to find that important paper that you are looking for.
Some records need to be kept indefinitely, like birth certificates, car titles and life insurance policies. You should invest in a safe-deposit box for these valuable items and give a trusted family member the extra key. However, much of the desk clutter should be purged and put into a paper shredder to clear the untidiness every now and again.
Financial records really need only be kept for a period no less than seven years and these would include tax related business expenses, receipts and income documentation. When you are ready to purge your important documents be sure to use a paper shredder so that no one will have access to your information. You can get an office shredder or a personal shredder at the office supply store or an online store. Don’t forget the shredder oil to maintain your new machine. A simple and quick couple of seconds to shred your information is all it takes, but will give you a peace of mind knowing that your information is safeguarded.
